Has anyone noticed how awkward or uncomfortable Andy looks while holding a cigarette or smoking on the show? Was Andy a smoker in real life?

No idea, Deborah, but you sure are right about that. When he had one in his mouth, he would sometimes roll it around with his lips. He never took more than a puff or two from one, that I saw. He seems to have 'quit' before the later seasons. They weren't very careful where they threw their matches or lit cigarettes, either. Andy put one out on his porch, flipped at least one in the yard, and Otis threw a match on the floor of the jailhouse, and so on. I never regretted quitting in 1976. (Besides, it's too dangerous smoking around my still. Can't afford to rebuild that barn again.)
i always thought the same too. i'm sure he was smoker (don too), but sure didn't act like it. see link below.

I remember reading somewhere that Andy was also a smoker for several years until health reasons forced him to quit.
Awkward indeed. Great way to describe it, Deborah. Andy never looked natural or comfortable with a cigarette. Made me think he was a non-smoker which was not true.
It seemed he often smoked when he was nervous or worried, so maybe that's why he didn't look at all comfortable with his coffin nails.
