Convicts at Large

This is a great episode, it's the one with three female convicts. But but but I'm still wondering about when Charles O'Malley (William Bouchey) returns on the bus from "DE-troit."  Andy offers him a ride back to his place, and he accepts. If it weren't for Andy, how was O'Malley getting back home? He obviously did not ALREADY have a ride, or he'd have told Andy.

Changing the subject, In "Manhunt," Barney's mother is listed in the cast, see for yourself, follow this link:

I believe I've seen this show 473 times, and never have seen "Mrs. Fife."   ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ???

  • That is a great question! I have always wondered that.

  • I’ve thought about this before too. I assumed he would just have to walk, but the episode sets it up as though his cabin is pretty far from town. I think generally there is a loose conception of geographic distances in Mayberry and surrounding areas. I can think of a few instances when references to the time it takes to get somewhere or how one would get there make little sense or contradict a reference from another episode.

One example that’s always irked me is in Opie’s Charity, when Tom Silby says “all I did was go DOWN to Charlottesville!”

I wonder if folks might contribute some other examples of odd Mayberry time, space, and geography .....

    • As a child,  when my grandmother would do canning, I recall her (and my aunts) saying she was going to "put up" some pickles. In 'The Pickle Story', Clara refers to it as "putting down" pickles. Curious.

      • And in the beginning of that episode Aunt Bee does call it “putting up” pickles.  I guess it’s true..... what goes up, must come down.

    • At times it seems like the “Continuity person” on the staff just wasn’t up to snuff.

      • Right you are. I said as much a year ago. In fact this is my thread. In the credits there's a female listed as in charge of continuity. And there were multiple writers to beg the risk. A decade later Mash4077 had much the same problem. Thanks to all of you for the outpouring.

  • O'Malley must have had a car because he had gas at his cabin, that's how they fueled Floyds car so they could go get groceries.

  • Barney "frisked" her, along with ??Cal?? and our little fat mayor when he was watching the back road.

    • Fat?!? Us Pikes just naturally have big bones.

    • Absolutely right you are. Now I recall it all.
