Doris Singleton, 92, USMC Guest Actress / Don Grady, 68, MY THREE SONS' Robbie

Two familiar faces from my "growing up with TV" era have died.

Character actress Doris Singleton has died at age 92.  A familiar voice on hundreds of radio shows like THE JACK BENNY PROGRAM, THE BOB HOPE PEPSODENT SHOW, GEORGE BURNS & GRACIE ALLEN SHOW, etc., she became a familiar face on TV too.  She's probably most-recognized as the competitive 'Carolyn Appleby' on I LOVE LUCY.  Hundreds of TV appearances include the snobby juror roommate of 'Edith Bunker' on an episode of ALL IN THE FAMILY, and two mother-in-laws on MY THREE SONS... First as 'Sally''s mother in season 5, and later 'Polly''s mother in the last couple seasons.

Variety obituary

Ms. Singleton guest-starred on an episode of USMC, as the PX clerk...

GOMER PYLE USMC  To Watch a Thief (4th season, 1967)

Don Grady, costar of MY THREE SONS (1960 - 1971) has died of bone cancer at 68.  He started in show biz as a Disney Mouseketeer.  Don played middle son 'Robbie Douglas' on the long-running MTS; he left the show in its next-to-last season and retired from acting for his first love of music.

Doris Singleton was great as Carolyn Appleby! One of her best performances in I Love Lucy was when she and Lucy got into a big beef over who had the most cutest / most precious child.

Don Grady was cool as Robbie Douglas. I didn't get around to watching My Three Sons until Uncle Charley arrived on the scene....  I don't recollect seeing any of the William Frawley (Bub) episodes. When Robbie married Katie (yum!) and had the triplets... well, I felt that MTS started to slide downhill. The arrival of Dodie and more marriages within the Douglas household accelerated that slide. (IMO)

My Three Sons had a nice theme song and of course, the animated wing tip shoe in the opening title card. Classic!!
