I was watching "Andy and Helen have their day" and noticed that George the TV repair man looked suspiciously like Ernest T Bass. Who are some other actors that have more than one role on TAGS?

  • Howard Sprague

Maggie Peterson

  • Charlene Darling
  • Doris, Sam Jones' date
This website has a complete list; one actress actually played 12 different characters and one actor played 11.

Reta Shaw, Big Maude Tyler, Eleanora Poultice and Ralph Henderson

I just watched an early episode, The Inspector, and at the end of the episode a character called "Luke" barricaded himself in his own home and was shooting at anyone coming to intercede.  When Andy brought Luke out, I was surprised to see it was Jack Prince, a.k.a. Rafe Hollister!  He had no lines, but that was him!

Luke Reiner....he also played moonshiner Ben Sewell.

I don't think this one is on the Mayberry Info list.

Molly Dodd:

  • The Rumor - Lillian with the horrible meatballs
  • Andy's Vacation - Maudie who threw a chicken at her husband
  • Class Reunion - Nate Bracey's wife

One of the band members practicing in court house before mayor came in that played sacs. Then in other show he was Willie Jack and Andy warned him about his brakes making a noise and wrote him a ticket.

And, of course, there's Clara Edwards/Johnson, etc.  I'm thinking Clara must have had a busy romantic life going on over there.  Probably, she remarried (and divorced?) a couple of times and that's why they couldn't keep her name straight.

This may have been complicated by her obsession with pickle-making.  Some men just don't like pickles, you know!

Anyway, Clara was always her own snobby, know-it-all self.  Just the TAGS writers couldn't keep her names straight...

I think Aunt Bee even called her Bertha (or Boitha) a couple times.  It seems like Frances' New York accent came through sometimes, like "Have you hoid the news" when Ellie was running for town council.  At least I guess that's what accent it is.

Rose from The New Housekeeper played a Clara Lindsey.  I used to think that was another Clara/Bertha Edwards/Johnson combination.

That was Forrest Lewis and don't forget he was also Cy Hudgins with the Loaded Goat (and I don't mean Otis).

Character actor Allan Melvin was one of my favorites.  He appeared eight times in different roles in the episodes noted below (thanks to Dale Robinson).  According to Wikipedia, you may also remember Melvin as:

Episode 50: Jailbreak

Episode 57: Andy and Barney in the Big City

Episode 73: Lawman Barney

Episode 90: Barney's First Car

Episode 99: Ernest T. Bass Joins the Army

Episode 118: Andy's Vacation

Episode 135: Barney's Uniform

Episode 222: Howard's Main Event

The lady that was Emmett Smith's wife has played various different roles.
