I was just watching the episode "The Case of the Punch in the Nose" from 1965. In the episode they talk about the time Floyd punched Old Man Foley while in the barbershop 19 years ago. Goober witnessed it, but says he was just 5 years old at the time. That would make Goober 24 years old in this episode.
George Lindsay himself was actually 37 years old at the time, being born in 1928. I thought that was interesting. Thing is, I can't help but smile thinking about a 5-year-old Goober. :)
To me, he's about the only one that didn't seem to look older in color, except for Thelma Lou.
I was trying to find a picture of a younger George Lindsey and ran across some other stuff about him. I must have not paid close attention to his bio before, because it's sounds like he did a little of everything in his early years in the obit below. There is also a picture where they say he was getting ready to wrestle some big guy to settle a dispute back in 1982. I never heard about that before, which doesn't necessarily mean anything! Looks like he was still eating lots of vegetables.
Such an interesting story, that wrestling match! I was able to find this on it:
Sounds like it was all in good fun.
That's funny and it's good to know he didn't get pummeled into the ground! George looked tensed in that picture.
Maybe they made a mistake when they said Goober was just 5 years old when he witnessed the punch-in-the-nose episode. Did Goober say that he was five or did one of the combatants say that Goober was five? In the heat of the argument and the ensuing years of telling and retelling the story, Goober's age could have been a casualty in the accuracy department.
Didn't Goober say he was "reading" a comic book when the fracas began? If he'd been five, would he have been able to read? I know Goob was a savant in the auto-mechanical area, but didn't think of him as a real gifted student in other areas. (Say it again, Andy.) Could be wrong, of course.
I figured Goober to be around 30 at the time of the rehashing of the story, when Barney was trying to close the case and, instead, stirred up a hornet's nest!
Well, Floyd said that Goober was a witness but that he was just a little fella at the time. And yes, he was reading a comic book (but perhaps he was just getting the story line from the pictures?).
Then when Barney asked him about it, Goober says he wasn't but 5 years old at the time.
I always figured Goober to be around 30 as well, and that's why this struck me as being so interesting.
Well done, Brent. And very interesting indeed!
Excellent points, Brent. It's a mystery, isn't it?
I'm doing episode #235 of the Two Chairs No Waiting Podcast on this very topic. Recording episode 235 of Two Chairs No Waiting at 8pm ET (6 May 2013) tonight! Join us in the chat room and watch the show live. http://live.TwoChairsNoWaiting.com/
I did a podcast based on this very post. Thank you all for the idea.
What a fun podcast that was! And I especially enjoyed the "treat" at the end. George made sure everyone was getting a laugh, even then.
