I know the show is pure fiction, however I keep wondering why there is never any mention of Andy's first wife. It's like the woman never existed. Andy never mentions her nor does anyone else in the show even make a reference to/about her. She doesn't even have a name or relatives that come to visit Opie. Since the show is so family oriented, you would think that there would be some sort of reference about her somewhere in some of the episodes. Have I missed something somewhere?

Andy is explaining the meaning of love to Opie, explaining why Aunt Bee is going to marry Mr. Goss. Opie asks, "Did you and Mom have that same kind of love?" to which Andy replies, "Yes, son, we did."

1. In the pilot from the Danny Thomas Show, Opie comes in the office whining about a woman killing his pet turtle, and they briefly mention her.
2. Opie asks Andy if he and his mother loved each other in, dare I say, the first episode of the series.
It's a pretty common trope in television and film to kill off a parent before they even appear.

Permalink Reply by Janice Carter on January 19, 2013 at 1:57pm Just the other day I was watching "Bringing Up Opie" (the one where Opie has to plant "spinish") and I happened to notice a framed picture of Aunt Bee in both Opie and Andy's rooms. I thought that was interesting.

I think Opie's maw is referred to obliquely whenever Andy seems to be out of sorts or down in the dumps. Barney always leaps in to try to sooth him or provide a solution, etc. Usually, this is in the form of female companionship. But he (Barn) will often refer to the fact that Andy is "going it alone," or something like that.
Seems like Barney is acknowledging that Andy has lost the love of his life without coming right out and saying that. He ought to know. Didn't he "stand up" with Andy and Opie's maw?
Permalink Reply by Marlene Kublin on January 24, 2013 at 6:24pm How do you know that Barney stood up to Andy's first wedding? Where do they mention that? I am amazed at the memory my fellow Mayberry residents have!!!
