In the new doctor episode, there was a pay phone on the wall in the drugstore. Looked like it had a rotary dial. Does this mean people could circumvent Sarah? And the mere idea of an AT&T operator in Mayberry boggles the brain.

And and and now I keep seeing the courthouse door with NO mail slot. Furthermore in the Gentleman Dan story, there is talk about Barney going to the post office to get the mail, yet in another episode (the handyman) a mail carrier walks into the jail delivering mail. Hands to and chats with Andy.

I know my memory is "foggy", but in one episode (I can't recall which) the mailman (I think it was Dub Taylor) met Andy and Barney at the door and would not just hand the mail to Ole Barn, stating his hand was not an approved mail receptacle and he had to put it through the slot in the door.

Right, and then there WAS a mail slot in the door. Another 'sode had DubTaylor fighting with Barney over the wanted posters.

I'm old and I can recall when there was no rural phones in the area I grew up in.  As a mater of fact, the little town only had one, a pay phone in front of the Gen Store.  However, My parents tell be that prior to that time, there was a small independent local phone system in the town.  It had a central operator (Sarah) in the owner's house (the owner's wife) that had to connect the caller to the callee.  That office also was the connection to the rest of the world.

Now fast forward to when rural phones became available in that area.  Initially, the phones did not have rotary dials, but had a "blank" for it.  Later ones did have a dial, but it did not have a function and was not necessary. To make a call one lifted the receiver and "Sarah" came on the line and one told her what neighbor one wished to call.   (Everyone on the system could "listen" in.  But you know me, I'm not one to spread gossip.

So-called "party lines" were dying off in the '70s, but I bet they still exist. The Statistic still stands, I think---10% of America has not phones at all. I find those "switchboards" with all of the plugs to be about as fascinating as elevators with attendants and metal safety gates besides the solid doors.. Such as the hotel in Raleigh.

A little trivia about Dub "Taylor". He played "Opie" in the Dennis the Menace TV series that aired in 1959. Furthermore, Ron Howard played "Stewart" on the series and the grocer's name was "Otis".  Something tells me that this Dennis the Menace show and old Dub had a bit to do with choosing the character names on TAGS!
