Hey Jeff- That was veteran actor Walter Baldwin's only appearance as Floyd. Howard McNear took over the role after that. His performance was still memorable though, with one of the funniest lines of the series, imo.

Barn: "Next time I want a haircut I'm gonna' stick my head in a pencil sharp'ner!"

Floyd: "Yes, and it'll fit, too."

Actually, there was a third actor who portrayed Floyd. For the life of me, I can't recall the episode but the scene is of Opie and Andy walking past the barber shop and Floyd has his back to the window. Just as Andy and Opie get to the end of the shop, Floyd turns to the left and you can see that it's not Howard McNear. It happens so fast you really have to freeze the frame to see it.

You are absolutely correct..there was the 3rd Floyd, later in the series, 1 episode only..can not remember which episode. I will do some digging also.

I just came across another instance of someone else portraying Floyd. In the episode, 'Goober's Contest,' when Floyd angrily peels away from the fillin' station, there's an obvious stunt double driving the car.

Season 4 episode 10 they had a substitute actor playing Floyd while he was recuperating from his stroke...Howard McNair's last appearance on the show was Season 7 episode 30...

I read that Walter Baldwin was noted as being extremely nervous and was unable to remember his lines, he just did not work out and Howard McNair was hired to become the new Floyd.  This is documented in The Andy Griffith Show book by Richard Kelly (I think I have his name right)

Keevy, do you think that could have been that barber that was cutting hair with Floyd for awhile?  Remember, the one whose friends all showed up to get their "hair cut" every day.  They were always carrying a valise, I believe.  That might have been who that was!

No, it wasn't that episode I'm sure of. Think it may be the one where Andy and Opie are coming from the movies and discussing Gregory Peck; but that's a night scene and Floyd's wasn't open at night. I'll come across it eventually.

I remember the scene, too, but cannot place the episode.  I'll let it percolate for awhile and see if it shakes out!  :)

Some of them might have been carrying a shatzel, a satchel, or a valoose like Mrs. Mendlebright!

Great book, too, Mac. It was my first Andy book, purchased in the early 80's. It's so worn from use I have it held together with massive amounts of tape.

I think I just ran into the Floyd that David Barker mentioned in A Date For Gomer.  At the very beginning, Andy and Opie are leaving the barber shop when they show the 3rd Floyd.  It's also just before Andy explains "a haircut that doesn't look like a haircut" to Opie.

Wasn't there an interview once where Andy said that they had an episode that could sure use somebody like Floyd?  And that they called Howard McNear's wife and she said, "You don't know how much that would mean to him."  Then he was back on the show for a long time, thank goodness.
