Two nights in a row recently, I timed the commercial breaks and the heavily edited portions of the show and found something I had suspected but not to the extent the timing revealed. Some commercial breaks were actually LONGER than portions of the show ! ! !
Example, one commercial break was over SIX MINUTES long and the portion of the program following it was less than five minutes long.
I am so fortunate I was able to purchase the early episodes ( all B & W ) in their original complete form with nothing edited out.
I have stopped watching any Andy Griffith Shows in TVLand because it is a complete rip-off.
I hate it when they cut the epilogue -- usually the funniest part of the show.
I have the DVD's now but I still like to watch them on TV for some reason. The best TAGs period for me was from about 1973-1980 when a re-run came on every evening at 5:30. We would have dinner at 5 and I would rush through the dishes so I could sit down and have that show as a reward for my day's work.
That's why I switched to Netflix
A little known secret to the general cable TV viewing public is with today's technology, cable operators can know what channel each cable decoder in their system is tuned to. If everyone stopped watching TAGS on TV Land, they would know it. I'm in the process of switching all of my TV's at home over to the internet for services which are provided at no charge or a minimal charge like HULU. I just cannot justify paying a huge cable TV bill every month AND having to be inundated with mostly the same commercials over and over when there is a much less expensive alternative. Don't you all think this is what Andy would have done ?
He'd pitch the TV out the door...if he saw the trash shows shown there, too! Garbage not fit to put in your mind.
Exactly right Dr. We use Sky Angel internet tv and also use HuluPlus on our comptuers. Hoping to add Roku to our TV's soon. DirectTV, Dish and the rest of them should be very scared. We don't need to be subsidizing trash tv with our dollars.
You and I are dang near on the very same page. MeTV is a free over the air nostalgia channel where I live but they don't carry TAGS ( wish they did ! ), but if you think about it, if you have cable, you're paying for that every month AND having to watch a million commercials, most of which are pretty offensive ( especially at dinner time if you get my drift ) so it only makes sense to use HULU, etc., and with the convenience of a ROKU type device, you not only save money, and get to watch only the shows you want, but most important, you don't have to expose your family to the trash they try to ram down our throats and still have the gall to claim it's "No. 1" No. 1 on whose chart ?
Amen Dr. P! We're finally in the position, with this new technology, to make our own choices!
Amen - I did it two months ago
Netflix has all 249 episodes and its only $8/mo. Its nice 'cause you can choose your episode, no commercials AND its HD. No brainer.
I read where the original episodes were written to accommodate 28 minutes of programming and two minutes for ads, one minute in the middle and one minute before the epiloge.
Yea and don't forget that some seasons the commercials were done by the characters themselves.
I don't like watching any TV show in syndication because of how they are cut up. A few seconds here and a few seconds there really add up and ruin a show especially the ones you know by heart like TAGS. Andy himself got angry how TV Land cut up the show and later regretted selling his piece of ownership. But of coarse all the money it made for Ted Turner and Viacom he probably did regret that decision. Now with DVD and Netflix no reason to watch in syndication.
