I can think of 4 people (as a group) The Beatles were mentioned in "Opie's Group" but never appeared on the show.

Your education was worth every penny Dave Cline!

Einstein, J Edgar Hoover, Rock Hudson, Johnny Unitas, the two guys who they thought were stealin' cows that followed the leader....could go on and on!

I would like to add: Karen Folker, Bruce Newdell, Troy Bowden and Myra Lambert to the list. They are all mentioned in a episode. What episode was it?

I think the episode was "Opie's Newspaper". They got the idea from "Mayberry after Midnight", but I don't want to sound "dry as dust"!!!

Good Rube all were Opies classmates.

So I have a thought on one of these.  It's names of people who you never see and Old Man Rimshaw is on this list but technically you see him.  His picture is hanging on the wall and his eyes move.  Any comments on that?

Good point Robert...and I guess the same could be said of the Hubacher Brothers since we saw them on the Christmas card, but let's just leave them all and say those we didn't see in the flesh...will that work for everybody?

The Wright Brothers (people laughed them right off of Wright Air Force Base)

Alexander Graham Bell (people laughed at him right over the phone)

These mentioned in "Barneys Sidecar"

Well, if your talking about TAGS characters and not famous people in real life I think the first one I would think of would be Sarah.

Katherine Harney...who Andy had a crush on...and she went to the Prom with Bern Harris.

Hey Colonel, I looked at the link above of unseen characters and noticed that Rube Sloan and Burly Peters are both listed. However, they are both seen in "Alcohol and Old Lace" and "Mayberry Band". I think Thom Carney was the actor that played both characters.
Thanks for attaching that list, it's fun to try and remember each one. There are so many unique names mentioned.

A name to add though could be "Lilly Becker", the wife of farmer Sam Becker.
