I always assumed that the "pulling out the hat size" bit was originally written for TAGS but I came across it recently in a book of humorous stories compiled by Bennett ('What's My Line?') Cerf published in 1955. It was told about a Broadway stage actor fallen on hard times who was too proud to accept charity from his friends so they rigged a cash door prize at a Christmas party he was attending by placing identical numbers in the hat and....well, you know the rest.
