For those of you who don't know, Hal Smith just wasn't a resident of Mayberry. He was also a resident of Odyssey.
Hal Smith was the voice actor for the character John Avery Whittaker on the radio program 'Adventures in Odyssey', a fun, family oriented, Biblical based radio program.

After Hal Smith sadly passed away, a new voice actor took over the role for John Whittaker. You can search the seasons Hal Smith performed the character. He did a great job and it's fun hearing his voice.

For those who have never listened to 'Adventures in Odyssey', I highly suggest you do. It is a great radio program and Hal Smith does a great job being the voice actor for the character John Avery Whittaker.
