This decrepit old building, vacant over 20 years now, is responsible for my love of all things Mayberry. Located in Vale, NC, in Lincoln Co., it's about 60 miles from Mt. Airy. Every year my father and I would visit my grandmother and other kin for a week and would always end up here in the early evening. It was so much like Wally's with folks hanging around drinking bottles of pop and shooting the breeze. It was a rare occasion when someone just made a purchase and left, most folks would stay awhile and visit. I just loved it. The official name of the store/filling station was the Hog Hill Handy House but everyone called it "Helen's", after the woman who ran it. I can still hear those screen doors slamming and taste Helen's baloney sandwiches.
