Who are your top three favorite Mayberry characters and why?
#1: Barney Fife.
Barny is high strung at times, clumsy, dimwitted and over zealous. But, he's lovable. He loves to be a LEO and knows his duty--albeit he goes overboard many, many, many, many, many times. But deep down he is brave (when needed) and cares about justice. When it comes to dating he has the lovely, precious, Thelma Lou at his side, a woman who lights up a thousand rooms with her smile. But, at times, Barny gives Juanita a call...why? I'm not entirely sure.
Barny isn't the 'Marriage' type at first glance. He's the confirmed bachelor. But you're always rooting for him to marry Thelma Lou. Is there anyone better than her? No way.
Barny also has an ego problem, bless his heart. He wants the big time! Tears, gas, machine guns, road blocks...bring on them there outlaws! Mayberry is a small change--but that's exactly where Barey belongs. What would the school crossing be without Barney? Or the town choir? It just wouldn't be the same if Barney wasn't the deputy and seated at his normal spot inside the courthouse.
Barny does get spooked awfully easy--but at the end of the day he shows enough courage to get the job done, even if it means hiding in front of a car hooked to a camper or tracking down an escaped convict. Boy howdy.
Barny is the type of guy Mayberry needs. Without Barney, well, Mayberry just isn't Mayberry.
#2: Thelma Lou.
Thelma Lous is as precious as she is beautiful. She has a smile and heart that can light up a thousand rooms--and she does adore Barny Fife. She's the simple gal who lives life from the rim of a good apple pie and a quiet night of sewing. She isn't demanding, selfish, hateful, mean, fussy, impatient or rude. She is kind and generous and graceful and tender hearted--except when Barney gets too flirty up at the lake. Then...pow! Right to the moon.
Thelma Lou is the perfect compliment to Barney. They go together like peanut butter and jelly. She isn't overbearing--and her smiles speak in volumes. She is the type of gal that Barney needs and the type of gal that lights up Mayberry. When Thelma Lou appeared on an episode it was a special treat.
I wish Barney and Thelma Lou would have had a Mayberry show of their own.
#3: Earnest T. Bass.
What can you say about 'it's me, it's me, it's Earnest T!'. Like Thelma Lou, when Earnest showed up on an episode it was a treat. Earnest always had a reason to venture down from them there mountains into Mayberry--and it was seldom his plans ever worked out. From wanting to get an Army uniform to getting himself some education to wanting to fight a poor Brit on vacation. Earnest T was fun, likeable and downright silly. You had to root for him. You wanted to see him get what he wanted. Yeah, he broke his share of windows...ouch. And it's not likely Barney thought too highly of him, but Earnest T. was fun and deep down he had a good heart. He was just...a mountain guy who went about things the wrong way from time to time and didn't mind getting his point across with a few broken windows...ouch.
Earnest T. was a treat and he made Mayberry...colorful...as well as fun.
